A wine market and marketing analysis of Wine Specialities from the Tokaj-Hegyalja Wine District AgEcon
Szakal, Zoltan.
Tokaj Wine Specialities have few competitors and enjoy a rare niche among natural dessert wines since traditions surrounding their preparation, their specific microclimate, and unique taste enable one to utilise marketing tools for branding and market placement. To elaborate the marketing strategy, one needs market information that adequately shows the current situation and trends. During my research, I carried out segmentation for Tokaj Wine Specialities consumers and illustrated the correlations with statistical methods. My research covered the North-Alföld Region and Budapest. I performed a reliability test on the research databases and demonstrated that the areal data set can be integrated. My hypotheses findings also constitute new research.

A ZÖLDSÉGEK FOGYASZTÁSÁNAK VÁLTOZÁSA AZ ELMÚLT ÉVTIZEDBEN, A JÖVEDELMI KATEGÓRIÁK TÜKRÉBEN AgEcon
Pecze, Denes; Kiss, Oszkar Zsolt; Szekely, Geza.
A tartósított zöld-ségek fogyasztása minden jövedelmi csoportban emelkedett, különösen a legna-gyobb jövedelműek körében. Figyelemre méltó, hogy a legkisebb és legnagyobb jövedelműek csoportjában a fogyasztott mennyiségekben a sárgarépa, petrezselyem, vöröshagyma, fejes- és kelkáposzta esetében kisebbek a különbségek, mint a zöldbab, zöldpaprika, pa-radicsom esetében, vagyis a jobb módúak ez...

ABSOLUTE VERSUS RELATIVE RISK PERCEPTIONS: AN APPLICATION TO ECONOMIC VALUES OF SEAFOOD SAFETY AgEcon
Huang, Ju-Chin; Haab, Timothy C.; Whitehead, John C..
We examine the impact of multiple risks of related goods on consumption of a risky good. We argue that the consumption of a risky good depends on both its absolute risk level and its relative risks to other risky goods. Seafood consumption in eastern North Carolina is studied. We elicit, in a survey, the individual perceived risks as the reference points to derive the economic value of reducing health risk in seafood consumption. Revealed and stated data are combined to trace out demand changes in response to absolute and relative risk reductions. Our results show that seafood consumption is affected by the perceived absolute risk and by the relative risk to poultry, which confirms that individuals react to the multiple risks in a nonlinear way--as...

Abstraction and Modelling of Agri-Food Chains as Complex Decision Making Systems AgEcon
Bryceson, Kim P.; Smith, Carl S..
Agri-food chains are complex systems involving multiple multifaceted firms usually working together within specific industry sectors (e.g. grains, beef, wool, dairy) to satisfy an increasingly globalised market demand for high value food products. In so doing, the groupings of companies involved in an agri-food chain undertake activities that require multidimensional inter-organisational and cross organisational decision-making in the process of adding value to a raw commodity product through the production, manufacturing and distribution stages of the chain. Additional complexity is added by climate variability which impacts randomly and unpredictably on decision making in every component of the chain. The work outlined in this paper is a pilot...

Abstraction and Product Categories as Explanatory Variables for Food Consumption AgEcon
Barrena Figueroa, Ramo; Sanchez Garcia, Mercedes.
An understanding of the process by which consumers match consumption choices to personal values is powerful aid to guide strategic market orientation. It is of particular importance in the highly saturated food markets of developed countries, where consumer needs are shifting closer and closer towards the search for quality and emotional benefits. This study sets out to explore variation in the consumer choice structure in relation to three products with different levels of search, experience and credence attributes, using means-end chain theory. The results suggest the presence of an emotional component in foods that increases in complexity (becomes more abstract) with the number of credence attributes associated with the product; a fact worthy of the...

Access to Affordable, Nutritious Food Is Limited in “Food Deserts” AgEcon
Ver Ploeg, Michele.
A small percentage of U.S. households live in “food deserts,” where access to a supermarket or large grocery store is a problem. Low-income households often leave food deserts to shop where food prices are lower. Business costs, along with characteristics of potential customers, affect where stores locate.

Access to Local Agriculture and Weight Outcomes AgEcon
Berning, Joshua P..
Recent studies examine the impact of the built environment on health outcomes such as obesity. Several studies find for certain populations that access to unhealthy food has a positive effect on obesity, whereas access to healthy choices has a negative effect. Given the growth and popularity of locally grown food, we examine how individual weight outcomes are affected by access to direct-to-consumer local food. After controlling for potential endogeneity, we find that greater access to local food has a negative association with individual weight outcomes. We also find a negative association with greater weight loss over a one-year period. These results provide evidence that local food access can have potential indirect benefits.

Accounting for Product Substitution in the Analysis of Food Taxes Targeting Obesity AgEcon
Miao, Zhen; Beghin, John C.; Jensen, Helen H..
We extend the existing literature on food taxes targeting obesity. First, we incorporate the implicit substitution between sugar and fat nutrients implied by a complete food demand system and by conditioning on how food taxes affect total calorie intake. Second, we propose a methodology that accounts for the ability of consumers to substitute leaner low-fat and low-sugar items for rich food items within the same food group. This substitution is integrated into a demand system in addition to substitution among food groups. Simulations of a tax on added sugars show that the impact of the tax on consumption patterns is understated and the effect on welfare loss overstated when abstracting from this substitution within food groups.

Achieving Food Security in Mali: Key Issues and Investment Needs AgEcon
Boughton, Duncan; Dembele, Niama Nango; Kelly, Valerie A.; Staatz, John M..
A key role for USAID and its partners is to identify how their resources can best contribute to increasing the capacity of the private and public sectors in Mali to scale up their investments, and increase the impact of those investments, in relation to the food security dimensions of availability, access, utilization and stability. To fulfill this role will involve identifying opportunities presented in the Malian agricultural sector investment plan (PNISA) to address critical needs in each of these dimensions, the types of investment that will best address the needs, and the set of resources and skills that will enable Malian organizations and entrepreneurs to implement those investments successfully and at scale. Even with increased resources, however,...

Achieving sustainable food security and poverty reduction through consumer cooperatives in Hyderabad AgEcon
Helmerich, Juliana; Moid, Ma; Hanisch, Markus; Wulf, Bernd.
The Old Town of Hyderabad is characterized by a great number of low-income households, poor infrastructure and limited access to basic amenities, subsequently resulting in high crime rates. In this very traditional and religious society, the majority of the women in the Bastis of the old town face restrictions, discrimination and inequality as well as the struggle for basic nutritional intake every day. To help them with their daily responsibilities and add value to their lives the Confederation of Voluntary Associations (COVA) has initiated self-organized self-help groups (SHG), which encourage these women to save money so that, further down the line, they can take a loan. This micro-credit approach has been successfully implemented in rural areas. In...

Adding value to local resources specifically tailored for developing São Paulo State’s vitiviniculture AgEcon
Verdi, Adriana Renata; Otani, Malimiria Norico; Fredo, Carlos Eduardo.
São Paulo state’s vitiviniculture ranks second in Brazil, being characterized by the production of table grapes and wines derived from American and hybrid varieties. Despite its economic, social, and environmental benefits, the state’s vitiviniculture has witnessed an increasing dependence on grapes produced in other states over the last decade. Besides adding to the cost of producing wine in São Paulo, grape imports from the state of Rio Grande do Sul compromises not only product quality, but also the process of creating an identity for the product. To give a new impetus to the production of grapes and wines in São Paulo, the State of São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) developed a project called “Revitalizing São Paulo’s Vitivinicultural Chain,” a...
